Open the Data File

Select File>Open….

In the resulting dialog box, type Program FilesGamry Instruments, IncFrameworkDataEISPOT.DTA into the File name field.

Click the OK button.

You should now see the data file from the first tutorial on the screen. If you don’t see the file, Notepad may be looking for it in the wrong directory. Check that Program FilesGamry Instruments, IncFrameworkData is the correct path to your data files. If it isn’t, try again with the correct path.

Let’s look at the contents of the file. As we work our way down the file, use the page-down key or the scroll bar to move through the file.

The first entry is the tag EXPLAIN. This tag lets the Gamry Echem Analyst™ know that this file was produced using Explain™.

The next entry TAG EISPOT is a tag for the Gamry Echem Analyst. This entry indicates that this data set was obtained from the Potentiostatic EIS experiment and should be analyzed as such.

After the analysis tag you see the experimental parameters. Each parameter is labeled, so this section of the file is easy to follow. Notice that the labels identifying the parameters are always found at the extreme left-hand side of the screen. The standard EIS analysis scripts use the labels to find the parameters. The parameters can therefore appear in the output file in any order.

The last section is the actual curve data acquired during the experiment. Its label is ZCURVE. Following this label you will see a set of column labels for the data to follow. In the Potentiostatic EIS experiment, they are point number, time, Z real, Z imaginary, Z modulus, Z phase, Sigma ( measure of a goodness of fit), DC current, and DC potential.
