Set a Voltage

Set a Voltage is used to apply a voltage to an electrochemical cell and measure the current resulting from that current. It creates a graph of current versus time with 60 seconds of data recorded at 0.5 second per data point. The displayed data cannot be saved for later analysis.

You can run Set a Voltage on all Framework™ systems that include a Gamry potentiostat. You can use the Set a Voltage function regardless of the instrument tier assigned to your Gamry Instruments potentiostat.

This function is used for basic tests that do not need the sophistication of Gamry’s applications software. It allows you to apply a voltage for an indefinite time. Barring power outages, electronics failures, and computer obsolescence this can be an infinite time.

Run this test by selecting Experiment > Utilities > Set a Voltage on the Framework menu bar. A Set a Voltage window somewhat like this appears:

Unlike most of Gamry’s other software, you do not have the option of entering a voltage relative to the cell’s open-circuit voltage. The voltage you enter is always applied versus the reference-electrode voltage.

Also unlike most Gamry Software, you can choose to leave the cell on and the voltage applied after the 60 seconds of data are done. After 60 seconds have elapsed, a Cell Information window like this appears:

Click the Yes button to leave the cell on and continue to apply the specified voltage, or click the No button to turn the cell off.
